PeRjaNTAI

friday [finnish]

A journalistic concept consisting of a talk show (every friday on TV1, finnish national television) as well as mini-documentaries and social media videos. The mini-documentaries were published once a week on social media platforms, as well as aired on the talk show. The documentary defined the topic of the talk show. These documentaries usually addressed societal issues, telling the story of a single individual to provide a personal perspective. The purpose of the talk show was to broaden the discussion to a societal level by interviewing experts and individuals with personal experience on the subject. Social media videos were also produced based on the topic, some of which were also featured in the TV broadcast.

in the beginning

I started working on Perjantai as a graphic designer. By the time I joined, Perjantai had existed for 5 months and there was no Art Director (AD) in the show, but the previous AD had established a fairly restrained style. My responsibilities included creating custom subtitles, simple effects for social media videos, as well as cover images and titles for the Perjantai-documentaries. At the time I was a relatively novice graphic designer with little experience or knowledge about the AD’s role, but a significant portion of the graphic design responsibilities fell on my shoulders, as I was the only full-time designer on the show.

SUPERNATURAL / key art poster

I made a significant contribution to the planning and conceptualization of the talk show topics, and was involved every week in deciding what would be the title of each episode. My main task was to design key art images, which were used in the promotional and cover visuals for the talk show on social media, as well as in audience engagement materials, such as posters and flyers. I was extremely excited about the work, but with the absence of an AD, I struggled to maintain the restrained style and was often tempted by the allure of dynamic, bold designs and bright colors. The purpose of the key art image was to comment on the talk show's theme from a fresh perspective, often with ironic exaggeration or a tongue-in-cheek approach. I used a stock image library, Shutterstock, as a base material to create these collage art pieces.

animations

The idea of the intro animation was to bring the key art image to life and promote the theme in TV-trailer. Intro animation was also included in the shows intro theme.  Purpose of the second (and third)  animation was to bring in a new perspective or a plot twist, and act as an interlude in the TV-show.

brotherly rivalry

We worked on themes turn by turn with graphic designer Lauri Kuusela. Lauri was a more experienced graphic designer than me, and seeing his amazing work inspired me to improve my own skills week by week. I felt that there was a healthy brotherly rivalry between us.

sound design

I used sound bank “Epidemic sound“ for music and sound effects. But sometimes I just couldn’t find the right tone and had to become a foley artist and voice actor myself. You can hear my voice acting debut in the SISU interlude animation.

new logo & visual style

After one year of service I got assigned to create a new logo and visual look for Perjantai. I took the inspiration from the show’s way of tackling heavy topics in a light-hearted and humane manner. The colors shine brightly on a black background, like a burst of light in the dark. Perjantai's topics are also very colorful and cover a wide spectrum of emotions, looks, smells and tastes. It was also a reflection of Perjantai's eclectic style at the time. Each show had a unique key art made by variety of graphic designers. Of course everything presented here are made by yours truly.

from gd to ad

Working as an AD for the first time taught me a lot about graphic design and provided challenges. For example, creating such a colorful logo gave me gray hair at first. The colors worked nicely in the logo, but I could not put all of them in every graphic element. I had designed the logo, so there was no one else to blame. How could I make the the brand image look cohesive? How could I make it recognizable? To unify the look, I started applying a purple tint in the backgound.

perjantai-documentary

Perjantai-documentary was the flagship product of Perjantai brand.

documentarist tirri

I directed one Perjantai-documentary “Nännit rannalla“ [“Nipples on the beach“] in which a couple ponders on gender equality trough sexual objectification of the female body. I also acted as cinematographer with Meri Lantela and edited the film. Combined views (Yle Areena, Youtube, Facebook): ~575 000

change in animation style

Via copyright issues we had to give up shutterstock and an Illustrator Waltteri Lahti joined my graphics team. It changed the workflow quite a lot. Before I came up with the idea for the key art and animation, then searched shutterstock for the right material. Most of the time the material was not exactly what i wanted so it more than often lead to some changes. I came to regonize it was actually a good thing, part of the creative process was a sort of communication with image bank. With Waltteri he would draw anything I could imagine and he allways did amazing job. But someties I missed the randomness factor from not getting exactly what I wanted, alteration during the process which often gave it something more.
